Here’s a super simple moisturizing recipe:
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1 tsp vitamin e/jojoba oil
- 6-8 drops essential oil (I used frankincense)
- Cut up shea butter into small pieces and place in bowl
- Add in coconut oil and microwave for 10 seconds at a time until liquid
- Combine other oils and pour into a container
It makes a great all over moisturizer. However, before committing to this recipe do a little test of coconut oil to make sure it doesn’t cause a breakout. Coconut oil is comedogenic, which means it can clog pores and encourages the formation of blackheads. If you’d like to avoid using coconut oil, increase the amount of shea butter or use cocao butter.
As for essential oil, any scent you have or find pleasant would work. Frankincense can be expensive, so it’s not necessary. It has been associated with reducing pain if applied to the skin and also working. I’m skeptical of essential oils being a cure-all, so take it with a grain of salt. However, it smells nice so I’ll keep using it.
My final note is that if you’d like a lighter/whipped moisturizer, you can dump all the ingredients into a bowl and use a hand mixer or stand mixer. You can spoon it into your container once everything has been combined.
